Passenger rail transport in the EU grew by 5.8% in 2024, according to data published today by Eurostat. Last year, trains carried a total of 443 billion passenger-kilometres, the highest level recorded since the start of Eurostat’s observations in 2004.
Hungary recorded the strongest growth in passenger numbers compared to the previous year, with a 60% increase. In contrast, Romania (-4.9%) and Bulgaria (-3.1%) saw declines.
Measured by passengers per capita, Luxembourg leads the EU with 32.8 journeys per person. Bulgaria and Romania are among the lowest, with just 3.6 journeys per person.
