“100 years of Sinatra” – this is the title of the show with a premiere in Hall No. 3 of the National Palace of Culture tonight. The concert features Vassil Petrov, together with the Brass Association with conductor Angel Zaberski Jr. And the occasion - the centenary of the legendary American singer of Italian origin, also known as The Voice and Ol’ Blue eyes – Frank Sinatra.
A jazz singer with numerous prestigious awards to his name, at the start of his career, Vassil Petrov was frequently dubbed “the Bulgarian Frank Sinatra”. And with good reason – there is an uncanny similarity of tonality, style and most of all – selection of songs in his repertoire. To this day the singer performs dozens of Sinatra songs.
Since the beginning of 2015 Vassil Petrov has been giving concerts dedicated to Frank Sinatra. What makes tonight’s show different are the multimedia effects and the tap and swing dancing. The show also features tap dancer Georgi Peychev as well as the ballet dancers from Lindy Hop Bulgaria, who will tap dance together with Vassil Petrov himself. The concert features famous songs like Blue Moon, The Way You Look Tonight, the swing hits Fly Me to the Moon, New York, New York, the inimitable bossa nova The Girl from Ipanema and other emblematic titles. The stage presentation sheds light on some interesting, though lesser known facts from the life of Frank Sinatra. The evening’s entertainment has one more premiere to offer – the song Something Stupid in a new arrangement, performed by Vessela Boneva and Vassil Petrov.
After tonight, the show will be staged in Varna on 11 November and in Rousse on 12 November.
The show put on by Vassil Petrov and his cast of musicians is reminiscent of Sinatra’s own shows in Las Vegas in the 1960s as well as his legendary programme with Brazilian composer and pianist Antonio Carlos Jobim. The songs lined up for tonight’s event include My Way – a song that has come to be regarded as everything Frank Sinatra and his music stand for.
