Government delegation goes to Iran to look for buyer of Russian reactors, manufactured for NPP Belene

A government and business delegation headed by PM Boyko Borissov is leaving on a visit to Iran. In Teheran, Borrisov will hold talks with President Hassan Rouhani, Foreign Minister Javad Zarif and members of the parliament of Iran.

The Bulgarian delegation will look for a buyer for the equipment manufactured by the Russian Atomexportstroy for the Belene NPP project.  Following a ruling by the Court of Arbitration in Geneva on the commercial dispute between the National Electric Company and Atomstroyexport, Bulgaria has to pay EUR 550 million in compensation to the Russian company for the two nuclear reactors commissioned for the cancelled Belene NPP project. After the Arbitration Court ruling, the daily interest charged on this sum amounts to 167,000 euro. Besides Iran, India and Jordan are also potential markets as they have nuclear capacities identical to those in Belene.

Settling the conflicts in Syria and Iraq will also be in the focus of attention in light of the migration flows towards Europe as well as Bulgaria’s role as an external EU border. The Prime Minister and Foreign Minister will be accompanied by representatives of 15 Bulgarian companies. Cooperation agreements in SMEs and investments will be signed during the visit by the Bulgarian delegation.
