The EU leaders negotiated during the Valletta Summit on Migration a programme consisting of 10 items aimed at reducing migrant flow towards Europe through the Mediterranean Sea. According to the new programme, the EU is to provide more assistance to the Libyan coast guard, in order to intercept human trafficking. The union will also help that country in investigations and rescue operations. Bulgaria’s President Rumen Radev who also attended the summit in Malta pointed out that the EU should boost protection not only along the Mediterranean Sea, but also along the union’s land borders, including Bulgaria. President Radev spoke with the German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Valletta. Radev and Merkel discussed the forthcoming visit of Bulgaria’s head of state to Germany and reaffirmed the commitment of Sofia and Berlin to boost bilateral relations.
