Bulgaria’s printed media accentuate on Wednesday on the refusal of the citizens of the Danube town of Belene (Central North Bulgaria) to receive refugees. A protest launched by the citizens of Belene chases away a Syrian family, Dnevnik daily writes on its first pages on March 8. The newspaper specifies that the Syrian nationals decided to leave that town at their own will after the protest organized by the local population against their accommodation. The public discontent erupted on March 3 (Bulgaria’s National Liberation Day) when the Syrians joined the local celebrations on occasion of the 139^th anniversary of the country’s liberation from the Ottoman Rule. 24 Chassa daily notes that the Syrians were invited to settle in that town by the Catholic Priest Paolo Cortesi who later received death threats. No Bulgaria municipality is willing to receive migrants, Sega daily writes on its first pages. An unnamed source from the state administration told the newspaper that there isn’t even a single town or village in Bulgaria that is willing to integrate refugees and be paid under the mechanism developed in the summer of 2016 and so far no Bulgarian municipality has wished to benefit from EU financing for each refugee who receives home, job and healthcare services. According to Sega daily, the Belene case is identical to the one in Elin Pelin, because in both cases we are talking about refugees who received a refugee status and have the right to reside permanently wherever they wish in that country. The newspaper reminds that less than a month ago Elin Pelin mayor announced in public that he had received a proposal by a nearby village to make money under the refugee mechanism, but he had categorically refused to do so. Now, nearly 200 citizens of Belene call on the town mayor to refuse to register the Syrian family. In both cases, the local authorities and citizens admit that those foreign national do not cause any trouble, but the local population fears that dozens of dangerous migrants would follow them later. Sega daily concludes that Priest Kortesi announced that he would return the Syrians to the migrant accommodation center in Vrazhdebna. However, the State Agency for Refugees has not yet confirmed that it would receive those refugees back to the refugee center. Bulgaria’s printed media also informs on Wednesday that due to the protest of the local population the Catholic Church in Belene is to suspend as of today the benefits to the local citizens which exceed EUR 50,000 per year.
