Seven times less migrants have been detained in 2017 in their attempt to cross illegally the Bulgaria-Turkey border as compared to 2016, Bulgaria’s Minister of Interior Valentin Radev announced. According to Minister Radev, this was mainly due to the border fence constructed at the Bulgaria-Turkey border. After the construction of the border fence the main migrant flow was redirected from Turkey to the Greek islands in the Aegean Sea. Some migrants also attempted to enter Bulgaria through the Black Sea, but Bulgaria is not their destination, Minister Radev commented.
