In the past 10 years Bulgaria paid EUR 8.1 million under lawsuits taken to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasburg. The judgements of the European Court of Human Rights regard violations made by state bodies, national court or public administration. Bulgaria paid biggest amount in 2009-EUR 1.8 million. Lowest sum was paid in 2014- EUR 177,000. In 2018 Bulgaria paid EUR 882,000, this country’s Minister of Finance Vladislav Goranov said. Between 2009 and 2019 the European Court of Human Rights concluded 751 lawsuits initiated by Bulgarian citizens. 150 cases are still pending. Bulgaria was sentenced to pay money under 457 lawsuits. However, the number of paid compensations is higher, because some of the lawsuits end without a verdict, but with an agreement instead, Minister Goranov specified.
