European Commissioner Mariya Gabriel was appointed First Vice-President of the European People’s Party. At the EPP congress in Zagreb Commissoner Gabriel was supported by 422 delegates and collected highest number of votes among the other 9 Vice Presidents of the new EPP President Donald Tusk. Mariya Gabriel has been Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society since July 2017. During her term of office the Single Digital Market became reality and the first Pan-European Programme “Digital Europe” with a budget of EUR 9.2 billion was launched. Commissioner Gabriel is an author of the initiative for free wireless Internet for the European municipalities. In the new term of office of the European Commission which will last until 2024, Mariya Gabriel will serve as Commissioner for Innovation and Youth. She will be in charge of the EU policies under the programmes Horizon Europe, innovations, scientific research, Erasmus+ programme, education and culture.
