The African swine fever has demolished 15% of the population of domestic pigs in Bulgaria since it emerged in 2018. A total of 203,000 pigs were killed and euthanized, this country’s Minister of Agriculture and Food Desislava Taneva announced. One in ten wild boars shot in Bulgaria was infected with African swine fever. According to experts, the population of wild boar in Bulgaria amounts to nearly 100,000, but their number has to be reduced to 20,000, Minister Taneva said. This situation with the African swine fever has not been completely dealt with, but it is under control, Minister Taneva added. She voiced confidence that the state authorities have corrected the mistakes and the negative consequences and damages stemming from this disease can be minimized, if the necessary rules are observed.
