Parliamentary Legal Committee endorses President's veto on State of Emergency measures bill

The members of the Legal Affairs Committee at the Bulgarian parliament have endorsed unanimously the veto imposed by President Rumen Radev on certain clauses in the State of Emergency measures bill. On March 22, the President announced that he was against state regulation of prices as a tool to combat profiteering. Radev also disagrees with the harsh penalties envisaged for the dissemination of false information related to the coronavirus outbreak, which in his view may pose a threat to the freedom of speech.
The president also regards the clauses in the bill related to the powers entrusted to the Bulgarian armed forces as not sufficiently specific, but agrees that the military should be involved in coping with crises.
The presidential veto will be discussed in the plenary hall this afternoon.
