13 November is the United Nations-declared day of blind people, a day to raise awareness of the problems of people who are visually impaired.

The first society of the blind in Bulgaria was set up by a group of visually impaired intellectuals in 1921. In 1946 it was renamed Union of the Blind in Bulgaria. Today the organization upholds the interests of its more than 13,000 members with a disability of 71-100% due to loss of eyesight.
