6 December, St. Nicholas Day is also marked in Bulgaria as Benefactors’ Day.
The day was first marked in 1937 in Shumen as a token of gratitude to all benefactors of the country. The date – 6 December – was chosen by prominent Revival-time figure Ilyia Bluskov to honour Nancho Popovich /1818 – 1883/, a benefactor from Shumen who celebrated his name day on Nikulden. Popovich left money for building a girls’ school in Shumen, one of the first in the country, for its maintenance, and for scholarships for talented schoolchildren.
