Just over 41% of Bulgarians live in overcrowded dwellings or in rooms, which do not correspond with the size of their household, data of Eurostat show. This indicator places Bulgaria third in the EU after Romania and Latvia. The average indicator for the EU is 17.2%.

As compared to 10 years ago, the situation in Bulgaria is improving. In 2010, just over 47% of all Bulgarian households lived in overcrowded dwellings.

Eurostat data also show that currently 11.5% of Bulgarians live in under-occupied dwellings, which are too large for their needs.
