Bulgarian pork production satisfies only 40% of domestic demand

Almost 90% of the farms in Bulgaria, which were affected by the outbreak of African swine fever in 2019, are already working. However, pork production has not reached pre-crisis levels.

The African swine fever outbreak led to a decline in the supplies of Bulgarian producers for the Bulgarian pork meat market from 70% to only 30 %.

To date, domestic pork production is recovering slowly and satisfies only 40% of local consumption, Polina Hadzhistoeva, chairwoman of the Association of Pig Breeders in Bulgaria, said in an interview for BNR-Shumen.

The pig farms have received European aid, which has improved their biosecurity. However, the virus exists in wild nature and the infection is still rampant in ten regions in Bulgaria.
