Organic farming areas in Bulgaria decline

Photo: library

Bulgaria remains at the bottom of the European chart of organic farming areas, according to Eurostat data. Areas used for organic production have decreased by 27% for the past four years. Only three island nations are behind Bulgaria - Ireland, Malta and Iceland.

According to the Bioselena Foundation, problems in the sector are caused by wrong decisions, insufficient funding and poor management, BNR’s Veselina Milanova reported. However, experts hope that the drastic decline in organic farming areas was caused by clearing the sector of companies that started this activity only because of European subsidies.
