In 2020, Bulgarian export of herbs dropped by about 20% to less than 9,000 tons, data from the Bulgarian Association of Herbalists, quoted by "Bulgarian Farmer" show. However, export of medicinal plants to more than 50 countries continues and demand in Germany remains strongest.

The article reads that the decline was not only due to the coronavirus crisis, but was a trend observed in recent years. Among the reasons were the lack of manpower and the increased quality requirements.

According to the association, about 80% of Bulgarian herbs go for export. The main markets in addition to Germany are Switzerland, Italy, France, Spain, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, the USA, countries in South America and Asia.
