Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev: War is being waged against the Prosecutor’s Office

Bulgaria’s Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev complained of an unprecedented pressure exerted on state prosecutors by structures of the Ministry of Interior. “A war is being waged against the Prosecutor’s Office”, Ivan Geshev said at a briefing on Sunday. 

“We are to undertake the necessary legal actions to protect the magistrates and we will inform the National Assembly Speaker, Bulgaria’s President, this country’s Premier, the European Commission and the Embassies in Bulgaria about what is happening”, the Prosecutor’s Office notes in a declaration. The statements were made in connection with the investigation into a money laundering scheme regarding the construction of a section of Hemus motorway.

In an interview for the BNR, Bulgaria’s caretaker Minister of Interior Boyko Rashkov said that the Prosecutor’s Office had deliberately delayed investigation, in order to protect representatives of the former ruling party GERB from criminal liability.

Several days ago, the former tax officer Borislav Kolev was charged with money laundering in connection with the construction of Hemus Motorway. According to the prosecution, the detainee managed to draw EUR 27 million in 52 tranches.
