Two of the more than 100 ships stranded in Ukraine’s ports because of the war are Bulgarian. One is in Odessa, the other – in Mariupol. Most of the sailors on board the two vessels are from Varna, for the time being only six members of the two crews have chosen to evacuate by land.

Deputy Minister of Transport and maritime law expert Vladimir Varbanov said, in an interview with BNR, that the remaining Bulgarian crew members are on board the ships and are performing their duties. “We are in constant contact with the International Maritime Organization for the establishment of so-called blue corridors so that all ships can be brought to safe waters unimpeded,” Deputy Minister Varbanov said, and emphasized that efforts are needed by Bulgarian and world diplomacy so a solution can be found.
