Bulgarian police have detained former Romanian Tourism Minister Elena Udrea, who was sentenced in Bucharest to six years in prison for corruption. Prior to her final conviction, she left Romania legally because she had not been remanded in custody.

On April 7, a request was received in Bulgaria for urgent assistance from the Romanian police authorities in locating a car and its occupants. It was established that the wanted woman was in the area near the Greek border. Romanian authorities have sent a European arrest warrant to Udrea and she has been detained for 24 hours.

According to the verdict, in 2011 Udrea received bribes from various companies worth over 1.1 m euros.
