50 years since the first world record of Bulgaria in athletics

Йорданка Благоева

Today marks the 50th anniversary of Yordanka Blagoeva's world record in the high jump. The achievement of 24 September 1972 is the first world record for Bulgarian athletics. In Zagreb, Croatia, the Bulgarian athlete jumped 194 cm, crossing the bar with a belly roll.

At a celebration of the anniversary at the Museum of Sport in Sofia yesterday, Blagoeva received congratulations from many Bulgarian champions, coaches and heads of sports federations. They all highlighted not only Blagoeva's great success in athletics, but also her contribution as a pioneer in sports aerobics.
