Birth rate in Bulgaria continues to decline

Birth rate in Bulgaria keeps declining as it is 8.5 per 1,000 people, which remains lower than the EU rate (9.1 per 1,000), according to the 2021 Annual Report on the State of Citizens' Health, approved by the government. The document states that Bulgaria also remains with a high overall mortality rate, which in 2021 was 21.7 per 1,000 people, compared to 18.0 per 1,000 in 2020 and an EU average of 11.6 per 1,000.

At the same time, in 2021 the number of cases of malignant diseases continued to decline (392.3 per 100 thousand people for 2021 compared to 399.3 per 100 thousand for 2020). The incidence of cancer of the digestive organs, breast cancer in women and gynecologic cancer is the highest. Maternal mortality has also declined.
