The traditional award ceremony "Bulgarian Sportsperson of the Year" will not take place this December, announced Vesela Lecheva, Minister of Youth and Sports, to the TV channel bTV.

The rights to host the event are held by a private label, Ms Lecheva explained. However, the lack of prizes is not good for Bulgarian sport. Therefore, the ministry is considering ways to recognise and reward Bulgarian athletes and will do so, Lecheva promised.

According to her, there is strong football in the Balkans and Bulgaria should have been at the World Cup. But it is up to the Football Federation to make this happen and decisions, however painful, must be taken, she urged.
