The traditional kukeri festival called Pesponedelnik is making a comeback in Shiroka Luka after a two-year pause because of the coronavirus pandemic.
During the festival, 6 groups from different folklore regions of the country will reenact a ritual for banishing evil to the sound of the traditional kukeri bells. Pesyatsi is the name of a special kind of kukeri who go from door to door to bring health and prosperity. After making the rounds of all homes, they go to the village square to present various rituals – wedding, birth, ploughing and sowing rituals.
Pesponedelnik takes place on the first Sunday of March. Thousands of tourists from Bulgaria and abroad are expected to attend the festival.
