Improving the tax system, tightening fiscal policy to help tackle inflation and fighting corruption are some of the recommendations in the latest OECD Economic Survey of Bulgaria, presented by Secretary-General Mathias Cormann.

He did not give a specific timetable for when Bulgaria would be able to join the organisation, but Prime Minister Galab Donev was hopeful that this could happen within three years.

"We don't believe that almost half of the workers in Bulgaria are paid the minimum wage," Mr. Cormann said. This is the kind of data the organisation has, which means there is a high percentage of workers with income in the informal sector.

The Survey recommends improving the quality of educational outcomes and adult skills, including more workplace-based vocational training, enhancing the quality of jobs, better supporting immigration and putting in place more and better-quality childcare.
