The Union of Bulgarians in Cyprus has celebrated 25 years since the foundation of the organization. A cocktail on the occasion of the anniversary brought together representatives of most Bulgarian organizations on the island and official guests.

The governing board of the Union of Bulgarians in Cyprus sets as its primary task the attraction of more Bulgarians living in Cyprus into the social life of the Bulgarian diaspora.

The foundations of the organized life of the Bulgarians in Cyprus were laid way back in 1973, when on the initiative of Cypriots, friends of Bulgaria, mostly those who completed their higher education in Bulgaria, the Cypriot-Bulgarian Friendship Society was established. Its first chairman is Georgios Loizides.

The annual growth of the number of Bulgarians living and working in Cyprus led to the establishment of the Union of Bulgarians in Cyprus on April 4, 1998 in Limassol. Its first chairman is Dr. Atanas Koychev.
