“We have to do our best to do away with the feeling of impunity people behind the wheel have, and seek measures that are going to be painful for the offenders,” said Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov after a meeting he convened to discuss the problems of road safety, with the participation of a multitude of institutions – among them the prosecutor’s office, the National Association of Municipalities, MPs, parents of children killed on the road.

A few days ago, a 15-year old boy was run over on a pedestrian crossing in the centre of Sofia by a drunk driver.

The prime minister stated the steps that should be taken include legislative changes, work with municipalities, as well making sure the results of alcohol and drug tests will be ready within the space of ten days. Interior Minister Kalin Stoyanov on his part was adamant that deaths on the road, caused by driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or even as a result of exceeding the speed limit, should be categorized as homicide.

Meanwhile, hundreds of people got together in front of the Interior Ministry building in Sofia to demand more rigorous control on the road, and a solution to the problem of drivers under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
