MFA advises against travel to Iran

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) advises Bulgarian citizens to suspend travel to Iran except in case of extreme necessity. This reads a message from the Situation Centre of the Ministry.

"In case of extreme necessity to travel in the coming weeks, Bulgarian citizens on the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran should exercise caution, inform themselves about the situation in advance and avoid places where there are gatherings of large groups of people," the ministry said. Attention is drawn to the fact that the use of photographic equipment (smartphones, cameras, video cameras, etc.) in proximity to areas of tension may be a reason for detention or other risky situation. Should Bulgarian citizens need assistance, they can contact the Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria in Tehran.

Tension is expected to rise after Britain, France and Germany said on Thursday they would retain ballistic missile and nuclear proliferation-related sanctions on Tehran that were set to expire in October under the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, a step that could provoke Iranian retaliation.
