Beekeepers from all over the country protestеd in front of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food. They called for an end to duty-free import of honey from third countries, in particular from Ukraine and supported the nationwide farmers' protest. They also opposed the Parliament's refusal to extend the ban on imports of agricultural products from Ukraine.
The protesters placed their own beehives in front of the ministry and raised Bulgarian flags and banners that read "Stop discrimination, stop fake honey!". They were received by Agriculture Minister Kiril Vatev, who promised to send their demands to Brussels. Between October 1 and 10, beekeepers will receive the emergency financial assistance under the Rural Development Programme 2014-2020, Minister Vatev assured. Beekeepers say that 60% of last year's honey is still in their warehouses. They demand that Bulgarian honey be protected and call for a system for tracking the origin of honey. According to the beekeepers, the lack of incomes in the sector leads to business closures.
