Opposition disrupts parliamentary session over dismantling of controversial monument

MPs from Vazrazhdane, the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) and There Is Such a People (ITN) formed human chain around the rostrum in parliament in protest. Speaker Rosen Zhelyazkov demanded an explanation of what was happening. "Will someone please explain what this is about - a happening, a performance or a choir singing a song?" said Zhelyazkov, and convened a meeting of the Speaker's Council.
Claiming to represent nearly 1 million citizens, the malcontents declared that parliament would not function normally until the "lawlessness" in this country was resolved. The leader of Vazrazhdane, Kostadin Kostadinov, said that the dismantling of the Soviet Army monument in Sofia was illegal. Toshko Yordanov of ITN said they were protesting because of "the absolute brutality being done to the constitution". "This parliament will work if we want it to. If we don't want it, it won't work," Yordanov said.
