The amendments to the Constitution adopted today by Bulgaria’s National Assembly provide for reforms in the judiciary. The personnel authority of this system will be divided into a Supreme Judicial Council, in which the professional quota will prevail, and a Supreme Prosecutorial Council, most of whose members will be elected by Parliament.
The MPs also reduced the term of office of the Prosecutor General from 7 to 5 years without the right to a second term. The Prosecutor General shall be appointed and dismissed by the President on the proposal of the Supreme Prosecutorial Council. If the head of state does not issue a decree within 7 days of the election, the elected Prosecutor-General shall be considered appointed, the BNR’s reporter Silvia Velikova informed. The amendments to the Constitution must be voted on the third reading. However, this will be done not text by text, but en bloc, the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Constitutional Affairs Radomir Cholakov said for BNR.
