Deputy Minister of Defence Atanas Zapryanov leaves today for Turkey. He has been authorised by a decision of the Council of Ministers to sign a Memorandum between Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey on the establishment of a Mine Counter Measures Group in the Black Sea (MCM Black Sea). The document will be inked in Istanbul on 11 January.

The establishment of the MCM Black Sea was proposed by Turkey in August 2023 to ensure the safety of Black Sea shipping lanes and to address the threat of sea mines following Russia's aggression in Ukraine. MCM Black Sea is entirely peaceful in nature and is not directed against any other country. The mission is expected to help improve interaction and good-neighbourly relations between the participants without replacing NATO activities, presence and defence in the Black Sea, the Ministry of Defence said.
