At present, it is difficult to say that the state has a coherent and focused strategy for Bulgarians around the world and for preserving knowledge of the Bulgarian language and culture. Rather, each media outlet does what it can and what it thinks is right.

This opinion was expressed by the Director General of Bulgarian National Radio, Milen Mitev, at the 19th World Meeting of Bulgarian Media in Ukraine. He said that the stories of Bulgarians abroad, told by the media, should be heard "both by the people who are in power and can make decisions, and by our entire audience, which needs to know more about how our compatriots live around the world," Milen Mitev said, as quoted by BTA.

"In 1936, Radio Bulgaria started its operations with its first broadcasts abroad. Even then, our predecessors realised that a special media outlet was needed to spread knowledge about Bulgaria. One that could speak both Bulgarian and foreign languages," Mitev explained. He noted that the Radio Bulgaria team reports about Bulgaria in 10 foreign languages and in Bulgarian, and its content is available all over the world.

He appealed to all Bulgarians living abroad to contact the media and tell them their stories.
