Bulgarian military to train Ukrainian soldiers

The caretaker government has allowed the Bulgarian military to train Ukrainian soldiers on the territory of NATO member states. The reasoning states that with this decision Bulgaria expresses its support forUkraine, upholds Euro-Atlantic values and confirms its solidarity with the common efforts in support of international peace and security.

The Council of Ministers' communiqué states that "given the proximity of the conflict to our border and its importance for the security of Europe, the contribution is in line with the efforts of the other Alliance member states."

It is not yet known how many military personnel will participate or where the Ukrainian military will train, but the initiative is headquartered in the German city of Wiesbaden. In 2022 Bulgaria allowed up to 50 servicemen to participate in a European mission to train Ukrainian military. Around 15 armoured vehicles instructors were in Poland for about a month last year.

The decision on the NATO assistance initiative was taken at the latest NATO summit in Washington. Regarding the name of the initiative, Germany objected to the term "mission" because it implies sending NATO troops to Ukraine. NATO's position is for non-intervention in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
