TENNIS: Injury ends Grigor Dimitrov's Brisbane semi-final run

Grigor Dimitrov's path to defending his Brisbane title seemed to clear after top seed Novak Djokovic withdrew. However, the Bulgarian's hopes were dashed in the semi-finals, as he retired with an injury while trailing 4-6, 4-4 against Czech Jiri Lehecka.

In the second set, the world number two in the ATP 250 hardcourt rankings called for a medical timeout to consult a physiotherapist. He retired to the dressing room, received treatment, returned to the court and attempted to continue the match, but retired almost immediately after the first game. The injury was to his groin and hip, according to the Associated Press.

"I am sorry that the match ended this way. I hope Grigor will recover soon," said Jiri Lehecka.

Grigor Dimitrov has won the Brisbane tournament twice, in 2017 and 2024, and lost in the final in 2013.
