Belene NPP reactors could power data centres, says Boyko Borisov

Representatives of three of the world's leading investment funds, which have a strong interest in setting up large data centres in the country, have reached out to and held meetings with Bulgarian authorities, GERB leader Boyko Borissov told journalists. However, these centres need a constant and reliable supply of electricity. According to GERB leader Boyko Borissov, the reactors at the Belene nuclear power plant site should not be sold to Ukraine as they could provide the necessary electricity for these centres.

Former PM Borissov made the statement in response to reports that Bulgaria was withdrawing from the sale of two Russian reactors at the site of the unfinished Belene nuclear power plant project, which was to be Bulgaria's second NPP and for which the country had already paid $600 million.

According to Borissov, the fund's representatives asked Bulgaria to delay its decision on the sale so that they could talk to US President Donald Trump. "I want to talk to President Trump, to Elon Musk, to Microsoft, to Bill Gates - if they're interested, maybe we can make this happen. I don't think there is a single Bulgarian who wouldn't want the most powerful artificial intelligence to be based here. I'm thinking of the country," said Borisov.
