Bulgarian Consulate General in New York is recruiting interns and volunteers

The Consulate General of Bulgaria in New York is opening its doors to interns and volunteers who want to gain a realistic idea of the diplomatic profession and to join the cultural life of the Bulgarian community overseas.

In order to become an intern, a young person must meet the following conditions: be a Bulgarian citizen or a citizen of a country in the European Union, be a student in a specialty related to international relations, and be fluent in at least one foreign language. Applicants are required to submit a sample application to the Consulate General, as well as a resume, a certificate from the educational institution, and a motivation letter. The procedure for volunteers is even simpler. An important detail is that both positions are unpaid and the diplomatic mission does not undertake any commitment to accommodation.

"We try to give our interns the most realistic idea of what it means to devote themselves to the diplomatic profession - from participating in events, receptions and meetings with officials together with the head of the diplomatic mission to working with documents", says Angel Angelov, Consul General of Bulgaria in New York. "Our interns also participate in the organization of cultural events, prepare information for social networks. This way they gain first-hand experience, and these are the enormous benefits that they can derive from an internship at the consular representation."

The diplomatic mission also benefits from working with its potential future colleagues.

"We get young people who want to help us, and at the same time we manage to strengthen their connection with Bulgaria, we give them an idea for a possible future career in the Bulgarian diplomatic service", reveals Angel Angelov.

"The most common reasons for them to come to us is that in many places an internship is mandatory. In addition, at some point, when they start looking for a job or master's programs, this experience will be very useful to them, since in the United States, good universities do not just look at the academic scores, let's say, from the matriculation exams, but also the overall profile of the young person - to what extent he or she has been involved in charitable initiatives, what leadership skills and multicultural experience they have. And since we organize cultural events every week, we give the interns the opportunity to show that they are open to different cultures, have perceptions, flexibility and other very useful qualities."

The Bulgarian Consul General in New York Angel Angelov shares an experience with a satisfactory result for both sides.

"The internship of a Bulgarian girl (Victoria Ivanova – ed.) who is completing a master's degree in journalism at New York University has recently ended". We continue to cooperate with her - during the recent visit of a delegation from the Department of Journalism of Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" she managed to mediate the connection between the two universities and make this academic exchange happen", Angel Angelov says.

"We currently have an intern (Asen Nechev – ed.), a freshman at the University of Pennsylvania, who is already actively involved in events, writes information, helps in the consular service, has the opportunity to join some receptions. The fact that these young people have chosen to do an internship at a diplomatic mission of Bulgaria shows their interest, their openness to learning new things. They are all very intelligent and have the ambition to realize themselves in various aspects of foreign policy."

Positive examples can also be found among volunteers whose task is to help with the logistics of various events – for example, when there are elections, they welcome and guide voters. Among these young people are Alexandra Stamatov, who is a student in "artistic Florence", and Angelika Glogov, who was recently accepted into an elite American university.

"The message that young people send with their participation is that they are broad-minded, open to different cultural experiences, able to communicate, to meet people, to bear responsibility," concludes Angel Angelov. And these are qualities that are taken into account when applying to a university, for a master's program, and why not one day when working as a diplomat.
