Bank deposits in levs increase before euro adoption

The information campaign for the introduction of the euro in Bulgaria is late, Deputy Prime Minister Tomislav Donchev has told BNT. “This is a big change and people are afraid of the change,” he added. Asked about market prices, Donchev recalled that their level depends on the behaviour of each participant, including shoppers.

"Of course, traders even use the change of seasons and holidays to sell us something that we are not sure if we need. How could they not use the currency change?”, the Deputy Prime Minister pointed out.

After banks urged citizens who hold levs in cash to deposit them into accounts for greater convenience before the introduction of the euro, BNB statistics already show that in June newly opened deposits in levs amounted to 172 million euros. This is 22.5% more than in May and 20% more than a year ago. The amount of deposited funds by households has already reached over 45 billion euros.
