Hisarya has become the first Bulgarian town to join the European Association of Historic Thermal Towns (EHTTA), BTA reported. The mayor of the municipality, Iva Valcheva, announced the news before the 12th annual congress of the Bulgarian Union of Balneology and SPA Tourism held in Pravets.
Hisarya is a mineral water resort dating to the time of the Roman Emperor Diocletian. In 1882, Hisarya was declared the first balneological resort in Bulgaria. By the end of the year, the renovated “Momina Banya” thermal bath built in 1930 will open its doors, Valcheva said.

The European Association of Historic Thermal Towns was founded in 2009. It has 50 members from 18 countries. Hisarya makes Bulgaria the 19th member country. With this recognition, Hisarya ranks alongside European resorts such as Karlovy Vary, Baden and Vichy.

Kyustendil is the next possible Bulgarian candidate for entry into the association, the organizers of the congress announced.
