Bulgarian and international scientists develop nanoparticle treatment for cancer

Photo: БАН
Researchers from Bulgaria, Slovakia, Serbia and the Czech Republic are joining forces in the SeNaTa project – “Self-heating Magnetic Nanoconstructs for Theranostic Applications” – coordinated by the Institute of Catalysis at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, under the leadership of Associate Professor Dr Hristo Kolev. The aim is to develop innovative magnetic nanomaterials capable of both diagnosing and treating cancer, the Academy has reported.

These magnetic nanoparticles have the unique ability to heat up when exposed to an alternating magnetic field. This enables them to locally raise the temperature of tumour tissue to 42–46°C, a process known as magnetic hyperthermia, which can destroy cancer cells. In addition, when linked to radioactive isotopes, the nanoparticles gain a diagnostic function, allowing them to aid in imaging and detection.

Early results have already been published in international scientific journals, confirming the potential of this novel approach
