On 19 October 2025, the day on which Orthodox Bulgarians commemorate St Ivan Rilski the Miracle-Worker, the newly renovated St Ivan Rilski Church in Chicago will officially reopen its doors. Named after Bulgaria’s heavenly patron, the church will host services under the jurisdiction of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church.

“This long-awaited event marks a new chapter in the spiritual life of the Bulgarian community in Chicago,” reads a statement from the church’s parish council. “The renovation is not only a religious act but a testament to faith, dedication, and unity. It is a turning point for our community, demonstrating that, together, we can build a house for God and leave a legacy for our children.”

The special occasion will be attended by Bishop Kliment, titular bishop and vicar to His Eminence Metropolitan Joseph of the USA, Canada and Australia. Following the morning service on 19 October, the church will be consecrated and a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy will be celebrated, during which Father Kiril Kirilov will be installed as parish priest. A festive luncheon will then be held to celebrate the reopening and the church’s feast day.

Father Kiril is the first priest to serve at St. Ivan Rilski Church under the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. Prior to his arrival in Chicago, he served at St. Nikolai Church in Petrich and St. George Monastery in Hadzhidimovo in Bulgaria, where he left a legacy of pastoral care and devotion.

Father Kiril

“Father Kiril’s mission is to open the church to everyone, especially young people and children — the future of our faith”, notes the church website. “His aim is to make St. Ivan Rilski Church the spiritual centre of the Bulgarian community — a place for prayer, learning and preserving our traditions.”

In the spirit of unity, the Bulgarian community in Chicago undertook extensive renovations to preserve the church and prepare it for services, cultural events and gatherings. Inside, the church features a carved wooden altar and icons by artist Ognyan Todorov, while the nave is adorned with Bulgarian motifs. Kina Bagovska painted the icons of the Twelve Apostles, and a bust of Vasil Levski, Bulgaria’s national hero, stands in front of the church.

St. Ivan Rilski Church has long served as a spiritual haven for the Bulgarian immigrant community in America, hosting events that celebrate Bulgarian culture, language and traditions.
