Bulgarian archaeologists discover Thracian sanctuary from Hellenistic period near Bulgaria-Greece border

Bulgarian archaeologists discovered a Thracian sanctuary from the Hellenistic period near the Bulgaria-Greece border. The finds prove the close contacts between the Greek and the Thracian civilizations in the Rhodopes. The sanctuary was discovered near the village of Benkovski (Kirkovo municipality) and dates back to the 3rd-4th century BC. We discovered two temples which are closely connected with the popular temple of Orpheus near the village of Tatul. Although they are not of the same scale and beauty, these temples are evidence of the links between the Thracian and the Hellenistic colonies along the Aegean coastline, Professor Nikolay Ovcharov said. In 2016 a tomb of a Thracian princess from the same period was discovered in this region.
