Over 20 people including the Chairman of the State Agency for Bulgarians Abroad Petar Haralampiev were arrested in the frameworks of a special anti-corruption operation. The operation is based on information about bribery, forgery of documents and malfeasance. Special prosecutors and anti-corruption agents raided offices in Sofia, Kyustendil and Pleven. Intermediaries who were offering Bulgarian passports to Macedonian, Ukrainian and Moldovan nationals without Bulgarian roots are also among the detainees. In 2014 the Supreme Administrative Prosecutor’s Office has ascertained that the State Agency for Bulgarians Abroad issued illegally thousands of certificates of Bulgarian origin to Albanian, Kosovo and Macedonian nationals.
