Kozloduy nuclear power plant, which is the only nuclear power plant in Bulgaria, marks its 45th anniversary on September 4. The foundations of the nuclear energetics in this country were laid in 1974 with the official opening of Kozloduy NPP. In 45 years, the nuclear power plant produced over 625 million megawatts of electricity and provides over one-third of the total annual electricity output in the country. In line with its obligations connected with Bulgaria's accession to the European Union, Kozloduy NPP decommissioned the first four nuclear reactors before the end of their design lifetime. Today, units 5 and 6 of the nuclear power plant are in operation.
