Ban on purchase of Bulgarian citizenship planned

Photo: library

The caretaker government proposes to ban acquisition of Bulgarian citizenship in exchange for investments. This is planned in the draft amendment to the Bulgarian Citizenship Act. The amendment would abolish Art. 12a and 14a for receiving a passport after investing 500,000 euros in government securities or in a licensed credit institution under a trust management agreement. The members of the investor's family also acquire Bulgarian citizenship by naturalization. Since the creation of the regulations in 2013, after the acquisition of citizenship money has been usually withdrawn by investors.

The European Commission denounced this scheme and threatened Bulgaria with sanctions. Changes to the law are expected to be approved by the new parliament.
