The average life expectancy in Bulgaria is 73-74 years. In 2000, 100 economically active people were replaced by 120, whereas in 2021, 100 economically active people are being replaced by 64 people only.

"If this country fails to adopt the necessary measures to reverse the trend, the staffing problem will worsen and the new generations will struggle to solve it", Tsvetan Spasov from Bulgaria’s Ministry of Labor and Social Policy said at a press conference held at the Bulgarian Industrial Association.

According to the expert, the ageing population should be perceived as a hidden human resource. The authorities should encourage the use of this resource, Tsvetan Spasov went on to say.
