A Sofia municipality plan for the development of Mount Vitosha envisages improving transport connectivity and year-round access to the mountain.

The most important thing is for Vitosha to be integrated into the city, Sofia mayor Vassil Terziev said. To this end, modern tourism conditions should be created, other important factors are nature conservation, a social-economic balance and good management.

“A year-round access to the mountain includes how to get there on foot, by bicycle, by public transport, lift and finally – by car, which is at the moment the most convenient way,” Mayor Terziev said. The municipality has an idea to build footbridges over the Sofia ring road, he added.

Vassil Terziev pointed out that the mountain should be easy of access, most of all to children, pensioners and members of vulnerable groups. For children there will be educational itineraries, summer camps, green classrooms and schools. “Our big objective is for all children to have been up on Mount Vitosha by the age of 16,” Mayor Terziev said.
