The Sofia metro is marking 24 years since the first of its sections of five stations was commissioned. The first metro train was launched on 28 January, 1998, along a route that was 6.4 kms. long.

The construction of the first five stations began in 1979, when the mayor of Sofia Petar Mezhdurechki broke ground for the Vardar station. But the building of the 5 stations took 19 whole years; in 1999, 2000 and 2003, another three stations were added. All in all, the construction of the western radius of line 1 took 24 years. This was followed by the construction of lines 2 and 3, connecting Sofia’s suburbs with the city centre. The construction of new sections of line 3 is to begin in March, and is expected to be completed in 2025 – 2026.
