Bulgaria's caretaker government has developed an energy compensation mechanism in a draft law to implement the European regulation to tackle high energy prices. This was stated by the Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Hristo Alexiev at a meeting of the Energy Crisis Staff.

The mechanism is expected to be implemented until July 2023. Its emphasis is on preserving the operation of the regulated electricity market for household consumers. The mechanism will be financed through joint contributions from all electricity producers. Producers' excess profits will be taxed and these funds will be used to pay compensation to those in need.

Consumers of electricity, gas and heating with public functions - schools, kindergartens and nurseries, social homes, etc., will be provided support in order to continue to perform their functions calmly, Alexiev assured.
